Taking Care of Recovering Warriors: What Home Care for Veterans Looks Like

veteran home health care

According to a 2020 survey by the Wounded Warrior Project, the most common self-reported injuries and health problems among veterans include sleep problems, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, back, neck, shoulder problems, and depression. Approximately three in ten warriors need the aid and attendance of another person because of their injuries. Another one-fifth need more than forty assistance hours weekly.

Home health care is short-term or long-term care that veterans might need when transitioning from a rehabilitative situation to civilian life. It can also mean using home health care services to provide on-going care when someone requires this type of service. Some of the services offered are physical therapy, case management, skilled nursing, occupational therapy, wound care, speech therapy, or IV drug management.

What Caregivers for Wounded, Ill, or Injured Veterans Do

Taking care of a family or loved one who is an ill or wounded war veteran can sometimes feel like a heavy responsibility. Primary caregivers need to remember to take care of themselves and the vet in their lives. There are a few avenues for caregiver support.

Giving yourself a break by having one of our home health care providers come in and assist is a great start.

Another way to get the help and support you need is to look into the Department of Veteran Affairs, or VA, Caregiver Program. This program is a Source for wounded ill and injured service members and their primary caregivers. If they approve you as a caregiver, you may be entitled to a monthly stipend, travel expenses when your vet needs to travel for medical care, access to health care insurance, mental health care services and counseling for you, comprehensive Department of Veteran Affairs caregiver training, caregiver support, and respite care.

“The VA recognized the work of family caregivers who care for those who have “borne the battle” from all eras. Several support and services, including but not limited to: caregiver consultation, education and training, home and community-based health care for the veteran, and respite for the caregiver, are available from the VA. Under the “Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2010,” additional VA services are available to seriously injured Post-9/11 Veterans and their Family Caregivers through a new program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers.”

There are also many wounded warrior programs available. Visit the Wounded Warrior Project for more information, or check out information on the VA Caregiver Program..
